RCSD student-athletes shine at statewide swimming and indoor track championships against top competitors
Rochester, New York – The winter sports season has wrapped up across the Rochester City School District, but not before several standout student-athletes left their mark on some of New York’s biggest stages. Over the past month, competitors from different RCSD schools traveled across the state to take part in championship-level swimming and indoor track and field events, facing some of the strongest athletes New York has to offer.
For many of these students, simply qualifying for the New York State championships was already an impressive accomplishment. The meets bring together the fastest runners, strongest jumpers, and most skilled swimmers from across the state, creating a highly competitive environment where every second and every inch matters.
Among the most notable performances came from School of the Arts senior Eli Dobbs, who concluded his high school swimming career with a remarkable achievement. Representing the RCSD United swim team, Dobbs competed in the 100-yard breaststroke at the New York State Swimming Championships.
His performance did more than earn him a place among the state’s elite swimmers. Dobbs finished sixth among public school competitors across New York, clocking a time of 57.82 seconds. That result did not just secure a strong finish—it also set a new record for the RCSD boys swimming program.
For Dobbs, the result reflects steady progress over the course of his high school career. One year earlier, as a junior, he qualified for the state championships in a different event. In 2025, he competed in the 100-yard backstroke and placed 14th statewide, demonstrating the kind of growth and persistence that often defines successful athletes.
While Dobbs made waves in the pool, another RCSD athlete was turning heads on the track.
Padilla High School’s Ka’Mara Lane delivered an eye-catching performance at the state indoor track and field championships. Lane qualified for two events—the 55-meter dash and the long jump—placing herself among the top competitors in the state.
When the starting gun fired in the 55-meter dash, Lane proved she belonged on that stage. With explosive speed and sharp acceleration, she sprinted her way to a fourth-place finish, establishing herself as one of New York’s fastest young sprinters.
Her strong showing highlighted the depth of athletic talent emerging from RCSD schools and demonstrated how student-athletes from the district continue to compete successfully against some of the best competitors in the state.
Meanwhile, several athletes from Monroe High School brought their own momentum into the indoor track season following a memorable fall on the football field.
Just months after helping Monroe capture a state football championship, a group of players transitioned from the gridiron to the track. Their athletic versatility quickly paid off. Several members of the championship football team qualified for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Indoor Championships.
Among them was wide receiver Luis Falu, who earned a spot at the state meet in three separate events: the 55-meter dash, the long jump, and the 4×200-meter relay.
The relay team featured a lineup of familiar names for Monroe fans—Falu alongside teammates James Brumfield, Pooty Cunningham, and Brien Walker. All four athletes were also starters on Monroe’s football team during its state-title run, demonstrating their ability to excel in multiple sports.
For Walker, the championship weekend turned into a whirlwind of competition and travel.
The Monroe senior competed in the NYSPHSAA 4×200-meter relay on Staten Island on Friday, March 6. After the race, he faced a demanding schedule that would challenge even seasoned athletes. Walker then made the long, six-hour trip back to Rochester overnight.
Less than a day later, he was back on the court—this time representing Monroe in the Section V Class A basketball final. Despite the quick turnaround, Walker delivered a standout performance and was named tournament MVP, capping off a remarkable stretch of athletic accomplishments.
The achievements of these student-athletes illustrate not only their talent but also their determination and work ethic. Competing at the state level requires months of preparation, discipline, and a willingness to push through tough training sessions and high-pressure moments.
Even as winter sports come to an end, the momentum continues.
All four Monroe athletes—Falu, Brumfield, Cunningham, and Walker—are now preparing for the outdoor track and field season this spring. With their experience and success already behind them, expectations are high for another strong showing.
Across the district, coaches, teachers, and classmates have taken pride in the accomplishments of these young athletes. Their performances serve as reminders that dedication in both academics and athletics can open doors to exciting opportunities.
Congratulations to these talented student-athletes for a fantastic winter season.
