Rochester, New York – The City of Rochester is opening its doors to new voices and perspectives, inviting residents to take part in shaping the city’s future. Mayor Malik D. Evans announced that nominations are now being accepted for the 2026–2028 term of the New American Advisory Council (NAAC), an initiative designed to strengthen ties between local government and Rochester’s growing immigrant and refugee community. Applications are available through November 7 on the city’s website at www.cityofrochester.gov/naac.

The NAAC plays an important role in bridging cultures and communities, offering the Mayor’s Office and City Council advice and insight on issues that directly affect new Americans. The council is made up of 15 members—ten representing Rochester’s immigrant and refugee population and five from local service organizations that work closely with these communities. Together, they identify challenges, propose solutions, and collaborate on projects that help newcomers integrate, thrive, and feel at home in the city.

Membership on the NAAC requires more than just civic interest. Ideal candidates bring a strong understanding of the New American experience in Rochester, whether through lived experience or professional work in related fields. Council members are expected to attend monthly meetings, participate in subcommittees, and contribute to projects identified by their peers. Both Rochester and Monroe County residents are eligible to apply.

The nomination process is straightforward. A nominating committee will review all submissions before forwarding recommendations to the Mayor for appointment. The final list of members will then be confirmed by the Rochester City Council. Diversity and representation are key guiding principles for the NAAC, which seeks to reflect the full spectrum of cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds that make up the city’s neighborhoods.

Mayor Evans emphasized the importance of inclusive leadership and community collaboration, noting that the council gives new Americans a direct voice in shaping city policies that impact their daily lives. “The NAAC helps ensure that all residents—no matter where they come from—have a seat at the table and an opportunity to contribute to Rochester’s success,” he said.

As Rochester continues to grow into a more diverse and dynamic community, initiatives like the New American Advisory Council highlight the city’s commitment to inclusion, participation, and shared progress. The 2026–2028 NAAC term offers residents a meaningful way to help shape policies, strengthen cultural connections, and ensure every voice—new and old—is heard in the city’s ongoing story.
