Motorcyclist loses life after tragic collision with car on Route 22 in Canaan

Canaan, New York – A tragic crash on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of a motorcyclist after a collision with a car along State Route 22, authorities said.
According to New York State Police in New Lebanon, troopers were called to the scene at around 2:50 p.m. on October 5, 2025, following reports of a serious motor vehicle versus motorcycle crash in the town of Canaan.
Investigators said a 2024 Porsche was heading south on Route 22 when its driver attempted to make a left-hand turn. During the turn, the car failed to yield to an oncoming 2014 Harley-Davidson motorcycle traveling northbound. The impact threw the motorcyclist from the bike, causing critical injuries.
Emergency crews responded swiftly, and the motorcycle operator was airlifted to Albany Medical Center for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the rider later died from their injuries. “The operator of the Harley-Davidson was ejected from the motorcycle and airlifted to Albany Medical Center, where they later succumbed to their injuries,” State Police said.
The driver of the Porsche was also hurt in the collision but suffered injuries that were described as non-life-threatening. They were taken to Berkshire Medical Center for further evaluation and care.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the motorcyclist, as family members are still being notified. “The identity of the motorcycle operator is being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin,” officials confirmed.
State Police have since launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash, examining speed, visibility, and possible driver error as contributing factors. “The investigation into the crash remains ongoing,” troopers said.
The incident brought traffic to a temporary standstill along Route 22 as emergency crews cleared the roadway and investigators worked at the scene.
Residents in the area expressed shock at the deadly crash, saying the stretch of road is known for frequent speeding and poor visibility during turns. Many are calling for additional signage or safety improvements to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact the New Lebanon barracks with information that could assist the ongoing investigation.
