Alexandria Bay, New York – The waters of the St. Lawrence River will become the setting for a large-scale training operation as the New York State Police prepare for their annual exercise. On Wednesday, October 1, at 1 p.m., the State Police Underwater Recovery Team and Aviation Unit will gather near Alexandria Bay to carry out several hours of intensive practice.

The exercise will begin with teams setting up at Bonnie Castle, a familiar landmark along the river. Officials expect the training to last until about 3 p.m., giving residents and visitors a chance to see firsthand how these specialized units operate. Both the public and the media are invited to observe the activities, which State Police say are designed to keep their teams sharp and mission-ready.

The Underwater Recovery Team holds a critical role in investigations across New York State. Members are often called upon to locate evidence, recover weapons, or search for missing persons in challenging underwater conditions. Training on the St. Lawrence provides an ideal backdrop, with its swift currents and varying depths closely mirroring the conditions divers might encounter in real-world emergencies.

In addition to underwater drills, the operation will involve close coordination with the State Police Aviation Unit. Working together allows the teams to practice complex recovery scenarios that rely on both air and water support. Officials say these joint exercises are essential for maintaining the high level of precision and readiness needed for demanding missions.

The afternoon exercise will serve as both training and demonstration, reminding the public of the unseen but vital work these units perform year-round across the state.
