Supervisor Leenhouts invites the community to September 17 ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the new Philbrick Park footbridge along Irondequoit Creek

Penfield, New York – The Town of Penfield is preparing to celebrate a milestone in its ongoing efforts to improve local trails and enhance community connections. On Wednesday, September 17, at 3 p.m., officials, residents, and community groups will gather in Philbrick Park for a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the official opening of a newly constructed footbridge along Irondequoit Creek.
The new bridge stretches 500 feet and is located at 1 Linear Park Drive, adjacent to the park’s scenic trail network. For many residents, the project represents more than just a replacement for the aging wooden walkways that had reached the end of their lifespan. It symbolizes renewed investment in outdoor recreation, accessibility, and the simple joy of connecting with nature in one of Penfield’s most picturesque areas.
“I look forward to coming together with the community to officially mark the opening of this new bridge along Irondequoit Creek,” said Town Supervisor Jeff Leenhouts. “This project builds on our commitment to enhancing connectivity and accessibility for our residents.”
The structure not only provides a safe and modern passage for walkers, joggers, and cyclists, but it also improves access between Penfield’s trails and the Town of Perinton’s Spring Lake Trail to the south. With the new bridge in place, visitors will find it easier to explore a continuous stretch of parkland and waterways, reinforcing the region’s reputation as a destination for outdoor activities.
Local leaders say the timing of the project is fitting, as trail use has steadily increased in recent years, with more families, students, and seniors turning to walking and cycling for recreation and wellness. By creating a seamless connection between Penfield and Perinton, the bridge opens up fresh opportunities for cross-town trail exploration and encourages people to experience the natural beauty of Irondequoit Creek from a new perspective.
The ribbon-cutting will take place at the northernmost section of the footbridge. Organizers encourage guests to allow for a short, five-minute walk to the site, where signage will be posted to provide directions. Parking will be available at Philbrick Park, and town officials have emphasized that the event will go forward rain or shine.
Community members who may need special assistance to reach the event location are asked to contact the Supervisor’s Office at (585) 340-8630. Town officials stressed that accessibility is a key part of the project, and ensuring everyone can enjoy the bridge’s opening day is part of that commitment.
For Penfield residents, the new footbridge is likely to become more than a piece of infrastructure. It will serve as a place to gather, exercise, and reflect, offering both a literal and symbolic link between neighborhoods, parks, and people. And for a community that treasures its outdoor spaces, Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting will not just open a bridge—it will open new possibilities.
