Penfield, New York – Penfield residents will soon have the chance to safely dispose of dangerous household materials during a special collection event this fall. The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Day is set for Saturday, September 20, and will be held at the Town of Webster Department of Public Works, located at 1005 Picture Parkway. The event runs from 7:45 a.m. until noon and is organized by the Monroe County Department of Environmental Services in partnership with local towns.

This free service is designed to help residents get rid of common hazardous products that should not be tossed in the trash or poured down drains. Materials accepted include items like oil-based paints, flammable liquids, cleaning solvents, pesticides, and other toxic or corrosive substances often found in garages and basements. Residents may bring up to 30 gallons of liquid waste and 75 pounds of solid materials per appointment, though 55-gallon drums and business waste will not be accepted.

Officials stress that advance registration is essential, as the event operates strictly by appointment. In past years, time slots have filled up quickly due to high demand. To guarantee participation, residents are encouraged to sign up early at monroecounty.gov/hhw.

“Appointments are required and fill up quickly,” the announcement reminds participants. “Appointments can be made at monroecounty.gov/hhw.

The collection program is part of a broader countywide effort to protect public health and the environment. Hazardous household products, if discarded improperly, can contaminate soil and groundwater, pose fire risks, or endanger sanitation workers. By gathering these items in a controlled setting, officials ensure they are handled, stored, and disposed of safely.
