State Police continue investigation into death of 9-year-old child found unresponsive at Watervliet residence

Watervliet, New York – A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the Watervliet community as State Police continue to investigate the death of a 9-year-old child who died on Saturday.
According to officials, on August 2, 2025, New York State Police were called in to assist the Watervliet Police Department with a death investigation at a home located on 2nd Avenue. First responders arrived at the residence and the child was later pronounced dead at Samaritan Hospital.
Authorities confirmed that the Watervliet Police Department has since handed the case over to the New York State Police, who are now leading the investigation. The two agencies are working closely together to determine what led to the child’s death.
While the details surrounding the incident are still unclear, police have stated there is currently “no perceived threat to the public.” This suggests that the situation is believed to be isolated and there is no danger to other residents in the area.
As of now, the cause of death has not been confirmed and remains under review. “The cause of the child’s death is pending further investigation,” officials said in a statement.
Neighbors in the area expressed shock and sorrow, describing the scene as somber. Many shared concerns and offered condolences but also stressed the importance of waiting for official findings before drawing conclusions.
State Police have not released the identity of the child out of respect for the family and the sensitive nature of the case. Investigators are expected to review all available evidence, including medical reports and any possible witness accounts, in the days ahead.
The community continues to grieve as answers are sought. Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to aid in the investigation.
As more details emerge, the New York State Police say they remain committed to conducting a thorough and respectful inquiry.
