Rhinebeck man arrested after allegedly threatening neighbor with a handgun during dispute over tree cutting

Rhinebeck, New York – A dispute over tree cutting escalated into a serious confrontation in the Town of Rhinebeck, resulting in the arrest of a local man accused of threatening another person with a handgun.
According to New York State Police, the incident occurred on the evening of July 3, 2025, around 7:13 p.m. Troopers from the Rhinebeck barracks responded to Long Dock Road after receiving a report of a menacing situation involving a firearm.
Following a brief investigation, authorities say a verbal disagreement had broken out between two individuals concerning the use of a chainsaw to cut down trees in the area. The disagreement quickly intensified, and police allege that one of the individuals, 55-year-old Joseph Z. Dalu of Rhinebeck, brandished a black handgun and racked the slide in a threatening manner aimed at the other person.
As a result of the investigation, Dalu was arrested at the scene and charged with two Class A misdemeanors: Menacing in the 2nd Degree (with a weapon) and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 4th Degree (with intent to use).
Authorities noted that no injuries were reported during the incident, and the firearm was safely recovered. The specific make and model of the handgun were not disclosed.
Following his arrest, Dalu was arraigned in the Town of Rhinebeck Court, where he was released on his own recognizance. A follow-up court appearance has been scheduled for July 10, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.
“Menacing in the 2nd Degree (with a weapon) – Class A Misdemeanor”
“Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 4th Degree (with intent to use) – Class A Misdemeanor”
Local officials emphasized the importance of handling neighborhood disputes peacefully and reminded residents that threatening behavior, particularly involving weapons, will not be tolerated.
The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the New York State Police at SP Rhinebeck.
The Rhinebeck community, known for its quiet neighborhoods and rural charm, was shaken by the unusual nature of the incident, which unfolded in broad daylight during what began as a seemingly ordinary disagreement.
As legal proceedings move forward, Dalu will face charges that could carry serious legal consequences if found guilty. In the meantime, the situation serves as a reminder of how quickly conflicts can escalate and the importance of resolving disputes without resorting to violence.
