Fire destroys two campers at Brennan’s Beach in early morning blaze with no injuries reported

New York – An early morning fire tore through two campsites at Brennan’s Beach RV Resort in Sandy Creek on June 4, leaving behind a trail of scorched debris but, fortunately, no injuries. The blaze, which began around 3:00 a.m., destroyed two campers and sent flames several feet into the air, startling nearby vacationers awake.
According to New York State Police, the fire was reported by a seasonal resident at the resort who had been staying at site #1209. He and his wife had enjoyed a quiet evening around a contained campfire on their deck and turned in for the night at about 11:00 p.m. What started as a peaceful night quickly turned into a race to stop disaster.
The resident later awoke to find the fire had spread significantly from where their small campfire had been. “He awoke several hours later to find that the flames had spread approximately 10 feet from the original fire location,” the report states. Without hesitation, he alerted his wife, who dialed 911, while he and some neighbors grabbed a garden hose and tried to slow the flames.
But their efforts weren’t enough. The fire rapidly intensified, consuming their camper and then spreading to a neighboring unit. That second camper had several large propane tanks stored on site. As the fire reached them, the tanks ignited and exploded, creating loud blasts that echoed through the campground and added to the urgency of the moment.
Emergency crews from several local fire departments responded to the scene and successfully put out the fire. Though both campers were a total loss, there were no injuries. State police and the Office of Fire Prevention and Control launched a joint investigation soon after the flames were extinguished.
Their initial findings point to an accidental cause. “There is no evidence of arson or suspicious activity,” officials confirmed. The investigation remains ongoing, but all signs suggest that it was a tragic accident rather than any deliberate act.

The fire has left behind more than just physical damage. The resident who made the initial call lost not only his camper but all personal belongings stored inside. His neighbors also lost their unit and everything in it. Despite the devastation, many in the community are relieved that no one was hurt and that quick action likely prevented the fire from spreading further through the campground.
Brennan’s Beach RV Resort is one of the more popular summer destinations in Oswego County, known for its lakeside atmosphere and large seasonal population. This incident is a sobering reminder of the dangers that even small campfires can pose if not fully extinguished.
Campers in the area are being urged to review safety practices and make sure all fires are properly put out before bedtime. With the summer season just beginning, fire officials hope increased awareness will help prevent future incidents.
