Pittsford, New York – A meaningful chapter in Pittsford’s history will be honored this Thursday, May 29, as the community gathers for the official dedication of a new Civil War Veterans Historic Marker. The ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. at Pittsford Cemetery, located at 38 Washington Road.

The event marks the culmination of a years-long effort that began back in 2018. That’s when a group of fourth-grade students from Thornell Road Elementary, guided by their teacher Mrs. Stevens-Oliver, published a heartfelt booklet titled Eight Brave Soldiers in Pittsford Cemetery. The students worked closely with Town and Village Historian Vicki Masters Profitt to uncover the stories of eight Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery.

Their project did not go unnoticed. The class was honored with an award from the New York State Archives Partnership Trust for their outstanding research and dedication to preserving local history. A portion of their prize money will go toward planting flowers around the new marker—a final touch of beauty and care for the site.
“Eight Brave Soldiers in Pittsford Cemetery” highlighted the lives and service of the veterans in a way that brought new attention to their resting place. Now, thanks to the advocacy that grew out of that classroom project, those eight men will be formally remembered for generations to come.

The marker will be placed near the flagpole at the center of Pittsford Cemetery, and following the dedication, attendees are invited to stay for a light reception. Organizers hope the event serves as a reminder of the power of community-driven remembrance—and the impact young people can have when they are inspired to tell forgotten stories.

Everyone is welcome to attend the ceremony and pay tribute to the local heroes who served during the Civil War. It promises to be a touching and educational event for all ages.
