Mayor Malik D. Evans expresses deep sorrow over the loss of trusted advisor and community leader Victor Saunders

Rochester, New York – The City of Rochester is in mourning following the passing of Victor Saunders, a senior member of the city’s leadership team and a deeply respected community figure known for his dedication to peace, youth, and public service.

Mayor Malik D. Evans released a heartfelt statement on the loss, calling Saunders not only a close advisor, but also a dear friend whose contributions will be felt across the city for years to come. “Today, my colleagues and I are mourning the loss of one of my closest advisors, a member of the City’s Senior Management team, and our friend Victor Saunders,” the mayor said. “My heart is broken, but I am grateful that I had the opportunity to spend his final moments with him and his beloved family.”

Saunders played a pivotal role in shaping some of Rochester’s most important community safety and violence prevention initiatives. He was deeply involved in the creation of the Office of Violence Prevention, as well as the Rochester Peace Collective. Additionally, he helped grow the Pathways to Peace program, which supports young people in the city by connecting them with mentors, guidance, and alternatives to violence.

Known for his compassion, humility, and unwavering dedication, Saunders made his mark not through recognition, but through action. “Our community has lost a committed public servant who dedicated his life to the cause of peace and community uplift,” Mayor Evans continued. “He lived his life modeling the words of the great hymn, ‘May the Works I’ve Done Speak for Me.’ Victor has done great works, and my thoughts and prayers are with his wonderful family, friends and colleagues who loved him so.”
