Monroe County, New York – Residents living within a 10-mile radius of the R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant may hear loud sirens early next week—but there’s no need to worry. It’s only a test.

Constellation Energy Generation has announced that a full-scale sounding of the public emergency notification system will take place at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6. During the test, all 96 sirens surrounding the plant will activate simultaneously for approximately three to five minutes. The sirens are part of an important safety measure designed to alert the public in the event of a real emergency.

The test will cover a wide area including most of Webster and parts stretching toward Irondequoit Bay. The system is regularly maintained and tested to ensure it works properly, and next week’s event is one of the few times all sirens will sound at once.

The siren activation will be coordinated through the City of Rochester/Monroe County 911 system, with additional oversight and collaboration from the Wayne County Emergency Operations Center. In addition to the full-scale test, officials note that single-siren tests may take place throughout the day to further ensure system integrity.

Authorities want to remind the public that no action is needed during the test. These sirens are purely a drill and are not a signal to evacuate or take shelter. “In an actual emergency, the sirens will alert the public to tune in to a local Emergency Alert System (EAS) radio or television station for information,” officials said.

Current EAS stations, as well as emergency planning information for anyone living, working, or visiting within the 10-mile radius of Ginna or any other Constellation-owned nuclear facility, can be found at monroecounty.gov/safety-oem.

Located in Ontario, New York, along the southern edge of Lake Ontario, the R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant sits on 426 acres and is situated approximately 20 miles northeast of Rochester. It plays a key role in the region’s energy infrastructure and is one of the oldest nuclear power stations still in operation in the United States. The facility is also about 53 miles southwest of Constellation’s Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station.

Emergency preparedness remains a priority for both plant officials and local authorities, and these periodic siren tests are a critical part of that effort. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and review available resources to be ready in the unlikely event of a real emergency.

In the meantime, locals can go about their day on May 6 with the confidence that the sirens are just performing their job—and nothing more.
