Rochester, New York – Jennifer Blanchard, a first-grade teacher at Ida B. Wells-Barnett Elementary School No. 34 in Rochester, has been named a recipient of the prestigious Golden Apple Award, presented by News 8. The award recognizes outstanding educators in the Rochester area, and for Ms. Blanchard, it’s a reflection of her unwavering dedication to her students and the school community.

Blanchard, who has been teaching for 17 years, was nominated for the award by her colleague Kerry Zito. In her nomination, Zito highlighted Blanchard’s efforts to support student growth through an innovative classroom rewards initiative known as the “Roar Store.” The program encourages positive behavior by allowing students to earn and redeem points for items like snacks, games, and small prizes.

“Her commitment to students is exceptional,” said Ms. Zito. “She works with our community to stock the Roar Store. Social-emotional learning is a huge component of what we do at our school, that is, the motivation, and the kids buy into it.”

The Roar Store is more than just a collection of goodies—it’s built around values that the school promotes: being Respectful, Owning behavior, Always doing your best, and being Responsible. These four traits form the acronym ROAR, and students who demonstrate these qualities are recognized through the program.

What makes the store truly special is how it’s kept running. Ms. Blanchard regularly seeks out community donations to keep it stocked, making sure there’s always something exciting for her students to look forward to. It’s a reflection of her belief in the importance of both academics and emotional support, especially at such a young age.

“Ms. Blanchard is an awesome first-grade teacher who loves her students,” said Akilah Collins, Principal of School No. 34. “She goes above and beyond to support them in any way she can. We love her because she is selfless, always making sure kids get things that bring them joy.”

For Ms. Blanchard, teaching is not just a job—it’s a calling. She says she has always felt at home in the classroom and can’t picture herself doing anything else. Moments of connection with her students are what she finds most meaningful in her career.

“When a child says, ‘I love you,’ or ‘you are my favorite teacher,’ it is those moments, seeing the growth with a student who could not do something at the beginning of the year, and suddenly it clicks,” she shared.

The Rochester City School District expressed its pride in Ms. Blanchard’s recognition and thanked her for her ongoing dedication to children and their success. The district described her award as well-deserved and praised her work in creating a nurturing, encouraging space where young students can learn and grow.

As she continues to make an impact in her classroom, Ms. Blanchard’s story serves as a reminder of the power teachers have to change lives—not just through academics, but through compassion, creativity, and connection.
