New York State Police charge Canandaigua resident with felony assault and child endangerment

Canandaigua, New York – A Canandaigua man has been arrested following an investigation into injuries sustained by a five-week-old infant, according to the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Authorities say 25-year-old Jayden Q. Mendez was taken into custody on March 2, 2025, after investigators determined he was responsible for harming the infant. The case came to light when Ontario County Child Protective Services (CPS) received a report about the injured child, who was being treated at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. Medical staff noted the infant had significant bruising, prompting an immediate investigation.

Following a thorough inquiry, investigators concluded that Mendez, the infant’s father, had inflicted the injuries. A safety plan was implemented to ensure the well-being of the child.

Troopers arrested Mendez at his Canandaigua residence and transported him to the New York State Police barracks for processing. He has been charged with Assault in the Second Degree, a Class D felony, as well as Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a Class A misdemeanor.

Mendez was then taken to Ontario County Jail for a CAP (Centralized Arraignment Part) arraignment, where a judge will determine the next steps in the legal process.
