Talented student from School No. 42 earns recognition in prestigious international art competition

Rochester, New York – A talented young artist from Rochester is making waves on the global stage. Zahra Farady, a 10-year-old student at Abelard Reynolds School No. 42, has earned a major accolade in the International Committee for Mayors for Peace art competition, held in Japan. Competing against over 4,000 participants worldwide, Zahra was one of only 20 students to receive a special prize, marking an extraordinary achievement for both her and the Rochester City School District (RCSD).
Zahra’s artwork, which captivated judges with its beauty and meaning, depicts a serene autumn scene. “The picture I chose to submit is one of me swinging in a tree looking up at the world,” Zahra explained. “It’s a beautiful fall day and the leaves are starting to fall off the trees. It’s quiet and life is good.”

This recognition has not only brought immense pride to Zahra’s school but also to the larger Rochester community. Principal Deborah Washington praised Zahra’s dedication and talent, emphasizing the importance of student achievement on such a significant level. “It is such an honor to see the hard work our students put in,” Washington said. “Zahra has put us on the map internationally, and I’m so proud of the work that is going on at the school with the teachers who are working with our students, and then we see the outcome of what happens when they put forth good effort.”
Zahra’s journey to this international competition began with her participation in the local Mayors for Peace Art Competition, where she was among 56 RCSD students whose work was displayed at City Hall in October. Her impressive artwork was then selected to advance to the global competition, which aims to promote peace and create resilient communities by showcasing young artistic talent.

In a moment of great pride for the city, Zahra’s artwork is now on display at the United Nations alongside other winning pieces from around the world. During a visit to New York City, Rochester Mayor Malik Evans had the opportunity to see her work in person. Reflecting on the significance of her achievement, Evans said, “Zahra’s artwork is a beautiful piece and is a message to the world. In a world that can feel chaotic, your artwork reminds us of the simple beauty, stillness, and the power of perspective.”
The RCSD previously celebrated all 56 students who participated in the local art competition, with the top five winners in each age group advancing to international consideration. Zahra’s success in being named one of the top 20 winners worldwide highlights the level of talent and creativity emerging from Rochester’s young artists.
As Zahra’s artwork continues to inspire others on a global platform, her accomplishment serves as a testament to the power of creativity and self-expression. Her story is not only a personal triumph but also a moment of pride for her school, her city, and all young artists aspiring to share their vision with the world.
